Established in 1951 to promote the development and advancement of sports in Japan, the Japan Sports Awards recognize outstanding athletes and teams nominated by sports federations affiliated with the Japan Sports Association and the Japanese Olympic Committee. A selection committee of 15 members evaluates the nominees based on their achievements, contributions to the sports community, and character over the past year, and presents the Grand Prize to the most outstanding athlete or team.
